Whether you're a Broadway actor, a kid in theater school, or just someone who enjoys the belting vocals of the divas on stage, there is a chance you will workout at some point in your life. So why not enjoy it. I've created a 25 song playlist of some of my favourite Broadway tunes to sweat to. Now you could 100% add many more songs to this playlist. I mean while I was going through my song library I had at least 4 pages of songs I was picking over. But these are some of the best that I personally find get my body moving and make me want to continue my workout! So grab your phone, or Ipod, or mp3 player or whatever you use, head to the gym and let the music take you through your workout!
1. You Can't Stop The Beat-Hairspray
I think this song is a given when creating any playlist. This song is so high energy that Forbidden Broadway parodied it with "You Can't Stop To Breath." A truth I feel so very deeply. This song is perfect for getting onto that treadmill and running your heart out.
2. Whipped Into Shape-Legally Blonde
This song is literally about exercise, oh and possibly murdering your husband. But we'll disregard that. It says it all in the title, and if you don't believe this song will whip you into shape, just take a peak at Nikki Snelson's abs in Legally Blonde.
3. A Little Upset-Cry Baby
A high energy dance number that truly never got the love that it deserves. It's fun and has a great beat to it. Plus you get to listen to James Snyder. Here for it.
4. A Wild, Wild Party-The Wild Party
Again just reading the title, you should know why it's on this list. It is energetic, fun and upbeat. It's the perfect workout song.
5. The World Will Know-Newsies
Now I am probably the only musical theatre person who has never seen Newsies. But I do know this song, and I do want to stand on top of a newspaper doing fouettes till my face turns red. But I can't do fouettes so I'll just bike instead.
6.Wait For It-Hamilton
There are a lot of songs from Hamilton I could have chosen. But this one really gets my blood flowing. The passion in the lyrics and in Leslie Odom Jr's voice just speaks to me and makes me want to work harder, and faster.
7. Out Tonight-Rent
Working out is all about getting your blood flowing and increasing your heart rate. And who's heart rate isn't increased when listening to Out Tonight. I want to put on my thigh highs and kick some butt. So why not kick my own butt in the gym?
8. Anyway You Want It/I Wanna Rock-Rock of Ages
This song to put it lightly is about exotic dancers learning to do their trade. It's up beat, fun and some good old classic rock. Why not run to it?
9.Hot Patootie-The Rocky Horror Picture Show
I didn't know which Rocky Horror song I wanted to include. I wanted to keep this list strictly Broadway, but I run this thing and I'm breaking my own rules. So Hot Patootie as sung by Meatloaf it is.
10. What I Was Born To Do-Bring It On
Taylor Louderman has proved she belongs on the Broadway stage, and this song is no exception. I want to be able to spin while singing like this. It is my goal in life.
11. Totally F*cked-Spring Awakening
I had to include my guy Jonathan Groff in this list, but how could you not with a song like this? It makes me want to run around the room jumping up and down. So I'll do just that, I'll just throw in a squat.
12. I Like It-A Bronx Tale
This is a completely different type of song, but one that I literally cannot sit still to. When I saw Hudson do this live I jumped out of my seat with all the New Jersey Italians and applauded harder then I ever have before. This kids energy and stamina increased my life by 5 years.
13. Cell Block Tango-Chicago
I don't think I need to explain this one. It's fantastic. Work ladies.
14. Stick it To The Man-School of Rock
Alex Brightman's Dewey costume kept having to be taken in because he was losing so much weight during School of Rock. So there ya go. It's proven that it works, so listen to it and shred those pounds, just like Dewey shreds your face off with music.
15. Bring It On-Bring It On
Again Taylor Louderman. And Again a bunch of jacked, buff, hot cheerleaders who I would love to look like if I didn't love cheese so much.
16. Underground-Memphis
If you can keep still during this song, you are an enigma to me. I really do not understand. Since the cast recording came out, this song has always been in my workout playlists. It just makes you want to move.
17. Hair-Hair
The energy in this song is so infectious that it will have you and the rest of the gym running around like the hippies we all long to be.
18. Run and Tell That-Hairspray
Run is literally in the title. So do just that. Run.
19. I'm Alive-Next to Normal
We should all strive to look like Aaron Tveit. And with his smooth voice running through our ears, and the mental image of him swinging around that stage with just his boxers on will make you workout harder than you ever have.
20. Sincerely Me-Dear Evan Hansen
The theme with all of these songs is how energetic and infectious they are. And even though this song is about writing fake letters to and from a dead teenager it has a great beat to it that makes you want to move.
21. Will Power-Something Rotten
When Chrisitan Borle was filming Smash he started to gain a bit of weight. I get it, all you do is film your scenes, or sit around waiting to film your scenes. So he got to a gym and got ripped. You all remember his Smee, I know you do! So do what Christian did, but while listening to Christian play Shakespeare who is influenced highly by some Mick Jagger.
22. Up The Ladder To The Roof-Everyday Rapture
What harmonized singing between Sherrie Renee Scott, Lindsay Mendez and Betsy Wolfe doesn't make you want to workout? I don't understand.
23. Candy Store-Heathers
I don't think I will ever have the amount of power in my life that this song had, so instead I will take that feeling and translate it into my workout. Done.
24. Blackout-In The Heights
Another Lin Manuel-Miranda song, but what can I say the guy knows how to write. Blackout has been a favourite of mine for a long time. The climax in it is perfect to push yourself in a workout, and the steady pulsing beat is perfect motivation to keep going.
25. In Love With You-First Date
So I couldn't find this on Spotify, but have no fear it is out there somewhere. This song is on my mom's workout playlist ladies and gents. It's a great tune, with a really fun beat and it's guaranteed to get your blood flowing. Also Zachary Levi; who sings this song, is a Disney prince and a superhero. So he knows whats up.
