It's February which means Valentines Day is just around the corner. If you have somehow found yourself in love with a theatre nerd, or you are one yourself have no fear! I've compiled some of the most wonderful love songs in the Broadway canon. These are my personal favourites, so I'm sure I've left out some. So let me know your favourites as well! Now onto the mushy stuff!

I'll Cover You(Reprise)-Rent

A tear jerker of a song. The original might be upbeat and pretty, but this is just heart wrenching.

"I think they meant it When they said you can’t buy love Now I know you can rent it A new lease you were my love On life All my life I’ve longed to discover Something as true as this is."

Unlikely Lovers-Falsettos

I should just have an entire post dedicated to the love songs in Falsettos, but I truly love this one. A different kind of love and a beautiful song.

"What a group we four are Four unlikely lovers And we vow that we will Buy the farm, arm in arm Four unlikely lovers with heart Let's be scared together Let's pretend that nothing is awful"

Suddenly Semour-Little Shop of Horrors

This is an interesting one, there's so much love and appreciation between these two characters. I think the lyric "Seymour's my friend" speaks for itself. It's about friendship and falling in love with that person.

"Suddenly, Seymour is standing beside me He don't give me orders, he don't condescend Suddenly, Seymour is here to provide me Sweet understanding, Seymour's my friend"

What More Can I Say/ What Would I Do-Falsettos

I included these two together because they are so similar yet so incredibly different. Again both from Falsettos, and both wildly lovely. I really enjoy that you can see the love at two separate points in the couples relationship. Oh man bring on the tears.

"Can you tell I have been revised? It's so swell Damn it, even I'm surprised We laugh, we fumble We take it day by day What more can I say?"

"Who would I be

If I had not loved you?

How would I know what love is?

God only knows, too soon

I'll remember your faults

Meanwhile, though, it's tears and schmaltz

There are no answers

But what would I do

If you had not been my friend?"

You Happened-The Prom

Let's have some happy on this list shall we? I absolutely adore this song. The rhythm, the music, the energy. It's such a wonderful representation of young love.

"Then something

New happened

And turned my life around entirely

And that's 'cause

You happened

And look what happened to me

Something so

True happened

And soon it's time to share it publicly

And all 'cause

You happened"

End Duet/Transformation-Beauty and The Beast

I have forever been a BATB fan, and this song has consistently been one of my favourites. The love they finally reveal to each other, oh man. And that transformation. It's just wonderful.

"We are home

We are where we shall be forever

Trust in me

For you know I won't run away

From today

This is all that I need

And all that I need to say is..

.Don't you know how you've changed me

Strange how I fin'lly see

I found home

You're my home

Stay with me"

Not A Day Goes By-Merrily We Roll Along

Now, this song has to be sung by Bernadette Peters. It just has to. The emotion and storytelling she brings to the performance it was gives it it's romance. It's so haunting.

"Not a day goes by Not a blessed day But you're still somehow part of my life And you won't go away"

Bring Him Home-Les Miserables

Like the song before this needs to be performed by Colm Wilkinson, the 10th anniversary recording in particular. I'm clearly all for the more unconventional love songs and this one has to top that list. Beautiful and tragic. Everything that love is.

"Bring him peace, bring him joy

He is young, he is only a boy

You can take, you can give

Let him be, let him live

If I die, let me die

Let him live"

All The Wasted Time-Parade

I honestly don't know what I can say about this song that hasn't already been said, but man is this a gorgeous piece. JRB gives you everything you need in a love song. This is just so right.

"Now look at me—

Now that you're finally here with me—

Now that I know I was right to wait

And everyone else was so wrong

For so long...

All the wasted time"

Champagne-In The Heights

I just think this song is so romantic. The journey that the characters take in this short song just grabs at your heart strings. The one line that gets me is so simple and doesn't read much romance, but is so heavy in the context.

"Before you board that plane

I owe you a bottle of cold champagne"

Legally Blonde-Legally Blonde

If you at all have followed me you know why I love this song. It's extremely heart breaking, the honesty and realization in this song is what makes it so romantic. It always brings me to tears.

"What about love?

I never mentioned love

The timing's bad, I know

But perhaps if I'd made it more clear

That you belong right here

You wouldn't have to go

'Cause you'd know that I'm so much in love"

As Long As He Needs Me-Oliver

I think this song will be a bit controversial. In the context of the show, it's not the most romantic. The lyrics are, but when you think of what Nancy has gone through you just want her to leave and get out. But as a stand alone, man the power behind this song. It's unbelievable.

"The way I feel inside The love I have to hide The Hell! I've got my pride As long as he needs me"

Touch Me-Spring Awakening

I don't think it would be a Nicole favourite list if there wasn't a Spring Awakening mention. But this song. I just melt every time I hear it. I love the discovery that every character goes through. It's brilliant.

"Touch me, just like that And that, oh yeah Now, that's heaven Now, that I like God, that's so nice Now lower down Where the figs lie"

Grow Old With You-The Wedding Singer

I guess this is kind of cheating since it is from a movie originally, but who doesn't love this song? It's such an honest, simple representation of love.

"So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink

Put you to bed when you've had too much to drink

I could be the one who grows old with you

I wanna grow old with you"

Seeing You-Groundhog Day

I miss Groundhog Day immensely, it didn't get the love it deserved. And this song is just so beautifully understated. So simple and pleasant and gorgeous. It feels like real love to me.

"But I'm here And I'm fine And I'm seeing you, for the first time I'm alright And I'm seeing you, for the first time"

Some honorable mentions that I wanted to include, but not make the list a mile long! I Turned The Corner-Thoroughly Modern Millie Some Enchanted Evening-South Pacific What About Love-The Colour Purple The Next Ten Minutes-The Last Five Years Move On-Sunday in The Park With George When Words Fail-Shrek Bare-Bare A Pop Opera That Would Be Enough-Hamilton Dance With You-The Prom I Love The Way-Something Rotten Sailing-A New Brain
